TELEMATICS MULTIMEDIA APPLICATION FOR FARMERS SUPPORT

The TAP project TELEFARMS has developed a Web-based cross-country information system (Euronetland) of offers and demands for farms, land, and other rural enterprise opportunities. Professional users, administrative authorities and individuals throughout Europe can make use of the system to consult the information presented in multimedia databases and they can contribute to the dissemination of information.

The main features are:
- a central database Information Server;
- a Web server which distributes information to professional organisations (Intranet) the public (Internet);
- a Mail Server;
- an application server providing additional information (Geographical Information System, statistics and economic evaluation).

The site has been created to facilitate agro-economic affairs within the European Community. At the moment, three different countries are involved in the project. Later, partnerships will be expanded to other organisations in the EU and the site will be integrated into a network of sites which dealing with topics such as prices of agricultural goods, weather forecasts for farmers, Chambers of Trade and Commerce.

The site contains information about the agricultural sector, statistics about real-estate in rural areas, (investment opportunities, land prices, etc...). Rural tourism can also be promoted and manufacturers of agricultural machinery or fertilisers can publish advertisements on the site.

The web site is built using:

  • Database: SQLServer
  • Web site: IIS
  • Email and newsgroups: Exchange, Outlook
  • Reports and statistics on the Intranet: Crystal Report
  • GIS: GEOCONCEPT

    Dynamic HTML pages , called .asp pages, are used on the Web server and developed with Visual Interdev. They allow direct read and write access to the database. The use of counters on several pages enables to display detailed statistics on the Intranet pages. JAVA application development was based on JDK 1.1.8.

    A three tier architecture is used:

  • An object server based access to databases
  • A client for the user interface (data display, Man Machine Interface and input controls using the swing package method).
  • An application server.

    Multiple languages (French, English and Italian) are supported through parameter files.
